Jakub Józef Orliński (born December 8, 1990 in Warsaw ) is a Polish opera and concert singer with a countertenor voice who also appears as a break dancer.
life and work
Orliński studied at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and graduated with a master's degree in 2012. As of 2011, he participated in a number of singing competitions in Europe and the United States, and won several of them. In 2012 he was a member of the Young Artists Program at the National Opera Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. He gained stage experience as Second Witch in Dido and Aeneas and as Ariel in The Tempest at the Collegium Nobilium in Warsaw. In 2014 and 2015 he sang key roles in three Handel operas: Ruggiero at the Theater Aachen and the Staatstheater Cottbus , the Narciso at the Warsaw Chamber Opera and the Philippus at the Stadttheater Gießen . At the Leipzig Opera he sang selected arias by Henry Purcell as part of a ballet evening .
From 2015 he studied with Edith Wiens at the Juilliard School in New York and won first prize at both the Marcella Sembrich International Voice Competition 2015 and the Solo Competition 2016 of the Oratorio Society of New York . He was a finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions . At the Juilliard School he also attended a master class with Pablo Heras-Casado and could be heard and seen in operas by Cavalli , Dove and Handel. In the 2016/2017 season he sang Handel's Messiah in Carnegie Hall and works by Vivaldi and Handel at the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe .
Orliński is also active as a break dancer and has participated in several competitions. He finished fourth in the Red Bull BC One Poland Cypher Competition, and second in the Stylish Strike - Top Rock Contest and the Style Control Competition. As a model, dancer and acrobat, he can be seen in several commercials, for example in the campaigns for Levi's , Nike , Turbokolor , Samsung , Mercedes-Benz , MAC Cosmetics , Danone and Algida .
In July 2017 he made his debut with great success as Orimeno in Cavallis Erismena at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence . When he was asked by France Musique during his stay in Aix to play Vivaldi's Vedro con mio diletto from the opera Giustino , he asked about the dress code and received the answer: “It's radio, nobody will see you.” Considering the summery Temperatures, he appeared in comfortable casual clothing and shorts, but had to discover that firstly he sang in front of an audience and secondly video recordings were made, but, like his pianist, could not change anything about his clothes. The sporty look, as well as the perfect interpretation of the aria, may have contributed to the fact that the YouTube recording became the most popular countertenor recording with 4,531,516 views (as of December 13, 2019). The Erismena production was then also shown at the Opéra royal du château de Versailles and at the Théâtre Gérard Philipe in Saint-Denis . At Oper Frankfurt he took on the title role in Handel's Rinaldo in autumn 2017 and Unulfo in Handel's Rodelinda in May 2019 . In August 2019 he made his debut as Rinaldo at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera .
In the concert hall he performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the original sound ensemble Il pomo d'oro , and sang with the New York choirs Musica Sacra and Oratorio Society . In February 2019 he sang in Pergolesi's Stabat mater with Katherine Watson in Paris, in June 2019 he sang Narciso in a concert performance of Handel's Agrippina in Turku .
