Landwehr between Wellin and Welliner Baum
The Landwehr between Wellin and Welliner Baum is a road barrier designed as a Landwehr between the Herscheider village of Wellin and a north-east crossroads in the forest with the field name Welliner Baum at the Buschhagen survey .
Location and description
The Landwehr begins at the Siepen stream , a tributary of the Selmbecke , and stretches south up the slope to a high path. After crossing the high path from Wellin, the ramparts turn to the southeast and descend to the Lingenbecke stream , a tributary of the Else . The total length of the ramparts is approx. 500 meters.
The Landwehr blocked an old road connection from Herscheid via Wellin and Grimminghausen and Selscheid to Lenne near Hilfringhausen on the former border of the Danklin (Danklinghausen) peasantry in the Herscheid parish. The municipal boundary between Herscheid and Plettenberg still runs at the level of the Landwehr . The high path was secured at this point by a barrier, which can still be etymologically proven today in the field name Welliner Baum . The rampart from the control point down into the side valleys on both sides prevented the barrier from being bypassed.
In a Herscheider Landbuch from 1716, the Land and Hage corridors in front of the Bohm (= tree) and Land and Hage achter (= behind) the Bohm are also mentioned, which also document the establishment of a barrier at this point. The Landwehr was probably created in the 14th century by Count Engelbert III. von der Mark , who as Marshal of Westphalia from 1358 was responsible for the safety of the roads in the territory.
The Landwehr was added to the list of monuments on November 5, 1985 as the first ground monument in the municipality of Herscheid . There, contrary to the literature and the construction typical of roadblocks, the Landwehr is referred to as the old territorial border.
