The Richard-Schirrmann-Weg is a main hiking trail in the association area of the Sauerland Mountain Club and, like all the other main hiking trails, has the white St. Andrew's cross X as a sign , extended by the number 12 at intersections.

Richard Schirrmann was a co-founder of the German Youth Hostel Association . Born in East Prussia, he taught as a teacher in Gelsenkirchen and was later transferred to Altena . The youth hostel he set up in Altena Castle was the first in the world. A memorial here also commemorates Schirrmann.

The 121 km long path leads from Werdohl via Herscheid , the Nordhelle , Drolshagen and Waldbröl to Siegburg , but not through the town of Schirrmann's main work.
