(August 2019)

The Residenzenweg was a 157 km long main hiking trail in the association area of the Sauerland Mountain Association and, like all the other main hiking trails, has the white St. Andrew's cross X as a signpost , extended by the number 7 at intersections.

It began in the old town of Arnsberg and led via Neuenrade , Lüdenscheid , Halver , Egen , Wuppertal and Hilden to Düsseldorf-Gerresheim , where the route ended at the train station.

Because the hiking trail connected the two old residential cities of Arnsberg and Düsseldorf, the trail got its name. In between, the path led through very different landscapes. As far as Lüdenscheid one hiked through the rural Sauerland , before crossing the urban area of the district town Lüdenscheid with a high proportion of settlements, which is unusual for a hiking trail. Then one went towards Bevertalsperre and was now in the Bergisches Land . The next big city was Wuppertal, which, however, was hiked through in a much more hiker-friendly way than Lüdenscheid on the wooded southern height. After crossing the Wupper valley, you came to the historic center of Solingen-Gräfrath . A few kilometers further on, the Hildener Heide met another landscape, before heading mostly through meadows and fields to the southeastern district of Gerresheim in the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In 2012, the SGV decided to abandon the Residenzenweg along with other main hiking trails and no longer mark them. It was deleted from the association's register of roads on April 1, 2014.

history

The Residenzenweg was created towards the end of the 19th century with the X7 sign and initially only extended from Arnsberg to Halver. After the Bergisches Land was allocated to the club's territory, the Sauerland Mountain Club extended the route to Düsseldorf until 1935. This extension was given the addition a until after the Second World War , so that this section was listed as X7a.
