The Rhein-Ruhr-Weg was a main hiking trail in the association area of the Sauerland Mountain Association and, like all the other main hiking trails, had the white St. Andrew's cross X as a signpost , extended by the number 9 at intersections.

After its starting point at Dortmund's Westfalenpark , the route led via the southern district of Hohensyburg to Hagen-Hohenlimburg and on via Lüdenscheid , Kierspe , Much , Eitorf to the Siebengebirge , where the route ended in Königswinter am Rhein. On its 168 km, the route thus connected the rivers Ruhr , Lenne , Volme , Wupper , Agger , Bröl , Sieg and Rhine .

In 2012 the SGV decided to abandon the Rhein-Ruhr-Weg along with two other main hiking trails. Since April 1, 2014, the path is no longer listed in the association's path register and is no longer marked. From 2016 the remaining waymarks are to be removed. The southern part of the Rhein-Ruhr-Weg is also served by the new Bergischer Weg .
