The Plackweg is an old trade route that runs in the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park over the 581 m high ridge of the Plackweghöhe north of the Ruhr near Meschede . Today a main hiking route of the same name of the Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV) leads over the route . The Plackweg can also be used by bike and is part of the state-wide cycling network between North Rhine-Westphalia and Esshoff .

Surname

The name is said to be derived from "Plaggen" with which the partially moored path was laid out. According to another interpretation, the name is based on the word "placken" = "exert yourself".

Plackweg as a historical trade route

The beginning of the Plackweg led from the former Himmelpforten monastery over the ridge of the Arnsberg Forest on the watershed between Möhne and Ruhr (Lattenberg, Enster Knick, Stimmstamm , Warsteiner Kopf ( 556.9  m above sea  level )) to Brilon -Esshoff.

At the Warsteiner Kopf the Plackweg crossed the Kriegerweg , a medieval long-distance trade route that led from Siegen to Paderborn. In the Arnsberg Forest, the traces of the teams can still be seen in the up to three meter deep sunken paths.

An older branch of the Plackweg branched off 300 m west of the main summit of the ridge ( 581.5  m above sea  level ) to Kallenhardt , a district of Rüthen . The Lörmecke tower was opened on June 7, 2008 on this "old Plackweg" .

The author Wilhelm Leise suspects the Varus Battle in the area around the Plackweg - in the course of many theories and speculations about the location of the Varus Battle .

Plackweg as the main SGV hiking route

The Plackweg is an approximately 144 km long hiking trail run by the Sauerland Mountain Association. It leads from Hagen- Delstern via Hohenlimburg Castle , Wiblingwerde , Altena , the Hönnetal , Herdringen Castle , Arnsberg, Lattenberg, Hirschberg, the Stimmstamm, Esshof, Brilon and Messinghausen to Helminghausen an der Diemeltalsperre .

The hiking trail falls into the category of the main hiking trails of the SGV and, like all other main hiking trails, has the white St. Andrew's cross "X" as a sign , extended by the number "1" at intersections.

Blocking for landfill disposal

From the end of 2019, the dismantling of the slag endangered slag landfill of the former Westfälische Zellstoff AG on Lattenberg is to begin. The removal is to take place by truck via the Plackweg to the voice trunk and from there on via the L856. During the removal, the Plackweg is to be closed to hikers and cyclists in the Mesched city area. The dismantling of 250,000 m³ of pulp residues is expected to drag on until 2024.
