Wansbeck was a district in the county of Northumberland in England . The administrative seat was the city of Ashington . The district also included Bedlington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea . There were city partnerships with Remscheid and Schalksmühle in Germany.
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the urban districts Ashington, Bedlington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. The river Wansbeck gave it its name.
In 1996, the district was awarded the European Prize awarded for his outstanding efforts to European integration thoughts.
On April 1, 2009, in addition to Wansbeck, all other districts in Northumberland were abolished and merged into the Northumberland Unitary Authority .
