Newbiggin is a small town (town) with a good 6000 inhabitants in Northumberland in north-east England , United Kingdom .
geography
The place is located with a small fishing port, in which there are still traditional fishing boats ( Cobles ), right on the North Sea coast .
Etymology of the name
The name is made up of the Anglo-Saxon NiWe and the Middle English bigging and means Neuhaus (with the later addition of an der See ).
history
The village of Woodhorn, two kilometers to the north, is mentioned under the name Wucestre as early as 737 as a dowry to the diocese of Lindisfarne . In Newbiggin itself, for centuries there was only one chapel with a tower that served as a beacon. In the 13th century, Heinrich III. Market rights and in the 14th century the place rose under Edward III. even to the third most important grain port after London and Hull for supplies in the war against Scotland . In the Victorian 19th century, the beach first grew in popularity for hundreds of bathers, later the port also gained in importance through a coal mine opened in Ashington 3 kilometers west and an aluminum smelter operated in Lynemouth 3 kilometers north .
Attractions
The parish church of St. Bartholomew, built in the 13th century and rebuilt in 1912, is located north of the promenade directly on the coast.
After a shipwreck in 1851, in which ten fishermen drowned in stormy seas, what is now the oldest active location for lifeboats in the British Isles was built in the local harbor .
Off the coast is since 2007 the sculpture Couple of Sean Henry .
economy
After the end of the mining industry in 1988 and the aluminum smelter in 2012, the port is only of minor importance. The longest promenade in Northumberland offers plenty of space to watch the migration of North Sea seabirds in spring and autumn.
politics
From 1974 to 2009 Newbiggin-by-the-Sea was part of the Wansbeck district , named after the river of the same name, which flows into the North Sea 3 kilometers south of Newbiggin. Although the district is now part of the Northumberland Unitary Authority , the traditional Labor constituency continues to exist as one of four in Northumberland.
Town twinning
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, together with the neighboring Ashington, continues the town partnership with Remscheid ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) that existed from 1978 until the dissolution of Wansbeck in 2009 .
