Diocese of Lindisfarne
The diocese of Lindisfarne ( Latin : Dioecesis Lindisfarnensis ) was a Roman Catholic diocese located in what is now the United Kingdom and based on the island of Lindisfarne .
history
The diocese of Lindisfarne was established in 635 by Saint Aidan . At the same time the Lindisfarne Monastery was built . In 664 Wilfrid moved the bishopric to York . After Wilfrid's exile from Northumbria by King Ecgfrith , the diocese of Lindisfarne was re-established in 678 by the Archbishop of Canterbury , Theodore of Tarsus . The most famous bishop was Cuthbert von Lindisfarne 685–687.
In 875 the monks of Lindisfarne Monastery fled from the Danes. As a result, the Bishops of Lindisfarne resided in Chester-le-Street from 882 . The episcopal see was moved to Durham in 995 and the title was changed to Bishop of Durham .
The diocese of Lindisfarne was subordinate to the Archdiocese of York as a suffragan .
In 1970 the bishopric of Lindisfarne was re-established as a titular bishopric .
