Scythe smiths had their origin as a specialization of iron and blacksmiths . They processed Knüttel, a semi-finished product from the Zain forge , into their products. The blue scythes from Upper Austria and Styria as well as the white scythes from the Bergisches Land ( Solingen ) and the Sauerland ( Plettenberg ), which differed in their forging techniques, were in demand and famous all over Europe .

In the peasant wars of the 16th century, scythes on long poles played an important role as weapons (their "hammers" were merely straightened). Blacksmiths in Austria were sometimes punished with death if they forged scythes into weapons.

Preserved scythe smiths

The only surviving scythe forge in Austria is in Himmelberg in Carinthia.
