Rewe (proper spelling also: REWE; deriving Re vision joined the We stkauf cooperatives ) is a German company with headquarters in Cologne . With around 3,600 stores, it is the second largest food retailer in Germany after Edeka . Rewe is the core brand of the Rewe Group .

history

The history of Rewe goes back to the Revisionsverband der Westkauf-Genossenschaften , which from 1927 mainly looked after the purchase of goods for its members. These were organized as cooperatives, but largely independent merchants. After expansion in the 1930s and collapse during World War II , the company resumed operations in August 1945. Through acquisitions in the 1960s and 1970s, new supermarkets and brands came under the Rewe umbrella. The organizational structure was reformed in 1972 to promote cooperation between the subsidiaries and holdings .

Rewe has only existed in its current form since 2006. In May of that year, the cooperative announced that it would switch over 2,500 German supermarkets to the umbrella brand in one fell swoop. With the external appearance introduced in September of that year, the traditional brands HL, Minimal , Otto Mess, Petz and Stüssgen disappeared from the market. The campaign was flanked by a broad advertising campaign. This gave Rewe more weight and was supposed to secure further market shares through a uniform perception among customers, especially in comparison to the market leader Edeka . Rewe's parent company has been called Rewe Group since 2006 .

To expand the operational business, Rewe kept developing new formats, for example Rewe to go with a focus on ready-to-eat meals. In 2011 the company started a delivery service with a test run in Frankfurt am Main , which was gradually expanded to locations throughout Germany. With this approach, Rewe was considered a pioneer in online food retailing. At the same time, the change in customer values meant that sustainability became more important at Rewe in the 2010s. In 2014, for example , Rewe and Penny brought the first eggs from hens with a full beak onto the market.

Rewe is the most important sales line of the Rewe Group, a leading retail and tourism group. A limited liability company under German law acts as the umbrella company for the brand . It was entered in the commercial register of the Cologne District Court in 2009 , as the company has its headquarters in the city. There are branches in Eching, Hürth, Norderstedt, Rosbach, Teltow and Wiesloch. The object of the company is the wholesale and retail trade as well as the e-commerce trade, the operation of restaurants of all kinds, the development, planning and construction of commercially used real estate as well as investments. The share capital is currently 200 million euros. The management consists of Daniela Büchel, Christoph Eltze, Peter Maly and Telerik Schischmanow. At the corporate level, Rewe falls under the responsibility of CEO Lionel Souque .

criticism

In 2013, the ZDF broadcast Frontal21 reported on the surveillance of employees by cameras in Rewe and Penny branches without the consent of the works council . Experts described the procedure as "morally and legally scandalous". The Rewe Group granted monitoring for the years 2009 and 2010 and dismissed those responsible. A widespread spying was rejected. The same applies to allegations that the surveillance still existed in 2013.

In 2014, the case of an employee who had worked more than 1,700 hours as an intern in a Rewe supermarket in Bochum became known . She was awarded an additional payment of 17,000 euros by the Bonn Labor Court . The Rewe Group criticized the behavior of the independent retailer as a violation of laws and social standards and the “basic values of the cooperative”. The company then ended its collaboration with the owner. However, the LAG Hamm overturned the court ruling of the ArbG Bonn six months later and did not allow any further revision.
