The Erbach in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate and Limburg-Weilburg in Hesse is an 11.8 km long, northwestern and orographically right tributary of the Elbe stream .

geography

course

The Erbach rises in the Rhineland-Palatinate Westerwaldkreis in the Oberwesterwald . Its source lies between Molsberg in the north, Hundsangen in the southeast, and Weroth in the southwest on the southern flank of the partially wooded Eichberg ( 407.5  m above sea  level ) in the parcel of Ober der Rommershecke at about 301  m altitude. It is about 500 m north-northeast from the Roßborner Hof on the other side of the federal highway 8 .

Initially, the Erbach flows south-east for less than a kilometer, then turns to the south-south-west between Hundsangen in the east and Weroth in the west, both of which are almost a kilometer from the stream, and thus immediately crosses under the B8. Then some small streams flow into it, including the Bornshahnbach and the Kleine Erbach when coming from Weroth . Approximately from Dreikirchen, which the Erbach passes to the east, and its eastern district of Oberhausen , which lies east of the creek, it runs south to Obererbach and crosses under the Unterwesterwaldbahn twice . From then on, the railway line accompanies the Erbach sometimes more, sometimes less. Around Obererbach it makes a small quarter arc to the west to the local Untermühle, then it runs roughly to the south-southeast and after less than two kilometers reaches Niedererbach , where the Sandbach and Fischbach meet shortly after each other from the west. Immediately below Niedererbach, the stream crosses into the Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg, where it continues to flow parallel to the railway line in an east-southeast direction. Here it first passes through the Hadamar state forest, in which the Hasslerbach flows from the north-northwest as its only significant left tributary .

About three kilometers below the national border, the Erbach Elz reaches in the Limburg Basin , where the short Rupbach flows in from the west . After crossing under the Oberwesterwaldbahn on the other edge of the village against its flat floodplain, it flows into the Elbbach at a height of about 115  m , which itself flows into the Lahn after about two kilometers further south .
