CorePNG is a lossless video compression - codec , which on the image compression format PNG based. Every single image (frame) is compressed as a PNG. It is released as free software under the GNU General Public License .

The codec also has the ability to write P-Frames (Prediction-Frames), i.e. the storage of the difference information from one picture to the previous one. This increases the compression significantly, but requires higher computing power and more memory for encoding and decoding.

CorePNG is ideal for graphic videos, such as animation and CGI videos or screencasts as well as alpha channel videos, so especially for films with relatively flat areas of color.

The LCL codec is even more efficient for very flat films, such as alpha channel videos, which only consist of black and white surfaces .

For normal DV recordings (landscape, people, ...) HuffYUV usually delivers faster and smaller results.

CorePNG uses the FOURCC code png1.
