Kranstein

The Kranstein is a natural monument in the Westerwald , located on Kreisstraße 95 between Willmenrod and Weltersburg . It is registered under the number "ND-7143-507" in the list of natural monuments of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and a geotope of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus National Geopark .

The basalt hill of the crane stone is by a basalt quarry minded . After mining began on the northwest flank of a larger quarry , basalt columns were found there in the construction of piles. This geological feature shows the cross-section of a volcanic vent .

Minerals extracted when the volcano erupted gave indications of the nature of the earth's crust, which was up to 30 kilometers thick . The Kranstein is one of the most impressive basalt outcrops in the Westerwald. There is hardly a geological publication or description of the Westerwald without mentioning the Kranstein.

In 1984 the Kranstein was placed under protection by the district administration of the Westerwaldkreis and included in the list of natural monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

The Kranstein lies on the boundary of the local community Weltersburg at an altitude of about 364  m above sea level. NN .
