Alhassane Baldé (born December 21, 1985 in Conakry , Guinea ) is a German racing wheelchair athlete .

Childhood and youth

Alhassane Baldé has been paraplegic from the eighth thoracic vertebra since he was born due to a medical error. When his twin brother was born, the doctors did not realize that there was a second boy in his stomach. At the age of nine months he came to Germany for medical treatment. When he was five years old, he was adopted by his uncle, who lived in Germany, and his wife, whom he met while studying business administration in Münster. His uncle fled Guinea in 1978 at the age of 23. When Alhassane Baldé was six years old, the family attended a medical rehabilitation fair, where Baldé saw a mini racing wheelchair for the first time and was delighted. The developer Errol Marklein gave him the one-off for his sixth birthday and became his first trainer.

Baldé studied dual labor market management at the University of the Federal Employment Agency and works for the Federal Agency in Bonn .

Athletic career

Since Baldé was twelve years old, he has participated in international racing competitions with a wheelchair. In 2000 he traveled to the Paralympic Youth Camp in Sydney . In 2004 he started at the Summer Paralympics in Athens and reached the semi-finals over 800 and 1500 meters. In 2015, he improved the 15-year-old German records over 1500 and 5000 meters.

In Beijing he was eliminated in the preliminary stages, for the games in London he could barely qualify. In 2016 he was nominated for the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro for the start over 800, 1500 and 5000 meters as well as for the marathon in the T54 class.

In 2006, Baldé was elected Junior Sportsman of the Year for disabled sports. The city of Ahaus honored him in 2010 as athlete of the decade . In 2012 he was appointed “Ambassador for inclusion through sport” by the DOSB . In 2014 he was named "Sportles of the Year" by Bonn.
