from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Errol Marklein (* 1957 ) is a German disabled athlete who lives with his wife and daughter near Heidelberg . He has been paralyzed since a serious car accident on September 12, 1975 . In the rehab clinic, he began with wheelchair basketball , and later with athletics . Errol Marklein was nationally and internationally successful as a top athlete for almost 30 years. He ended his international sports career in October 2006 and now supports young handbike athletes as a team leader and coach. He also continues to actively participate in races such as the Styrkeproven road race in Norway.

Athletic career

Errol Marklein has been playing basketball regularly since the end of 1976, and in 1978 he participated in a German championship in athletics for the first time. As early as 1980, he qualified as the only high-speed wheelchair driver alongside Gregor Golombeck for the Summer Paralympics in Arnhem , where he reached the finals of 100, 200 and 400 meters. At the 1988 Summer Paralympics in Seoul , Marklein won over 100, 200 and 400 meters in both the individual and relay races, making him the most successful German participant with six gold medals.

In 1995 he won the New York marathon . He then ended his sporting career in a racing wheelchair and began taking part in handbike competitions. With the new piece of sports equipment, he became European champion in the individual time trial in 2003. In the same year he was named the best handbiker in category B, but the German Disabled Sports Association did not nominate him for the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. He was denied nomination despite his marathon best time of 1:08:13 hours.

In the summer of 2006, Marklein was the first paraplegic participant to take part in the well-known Styrkeproven road race, which runs over 540 km from Trondheim to Oslo and is one of the toughest cycling marathons in the world. On October 6, 2006, he officially ended his international sports career at the Handbike Marathon in Cologne. He is still active as a trainer and mentor. In 2009, together with athletes from Team Sopur, he lapped Lake Geneva in less than five hours, breaking his own record from 2006, which was 5:22:31 hours.

Commitment as a pioneer for wheelchair sport

Along with Winfried Sigg and Jürgen Geider, Errol Marklein was part of the team of disabled athletes with whom Sopur (today: Sunrise Medical ) developed Europe's first racing wheelchair. To this day, he has been working intensively on the further development of this supplier's handbikes. He is also head of the Sopur team and, together with other people interested in handbiking, initiated the “Handbike Trophy” (HT) racing series, which he helps organize and moderate every year. In addition, as a team leader and coach, Marklein promotes international talents such as handbike athletes Vico Merklein , Arkadiusz Skrzypinski and Silke Pan or the racing wheelchair driver Alhassane Baldé .
