Sunrise Medical GmbH , based in Malsch , Baden-Württemberg , develops, produces and sells wheelchairs . The company, founded in 1978 under the name Sopur GmbH , was incorporated into the US medical device group Sunrise Medical Inc. in 1992 . In June 2015, Nordic Capital acquired the Sunrise Medical group from Equistone Partners Europe . The corporate headquarters are in Malsch near Heidelberg in Baden . As a pioneer in the series production of racing wheelchairs in Europe, the company is still important in disabled sports , but now primarily in handbike sports .
history
1978-1992
The company has its origins in the metal construction company Sorg & Purkott (Quickie), which mainly garden gates until the late 1970s, gratings and banisters manufactured. Shortly after the 1980 Summer Paralympics in Arnhem , Hugo Sorg and Erich Purkott presented their innovative roller ergometer at the wheelchair sports club in Heidelberg-Schlierbach . In cooperation with the disabled athletes Errol Marklein , Winfried Sigg and Jürgen Geider, Sopur created the first racing wheelchair in Europe, the Track . The success with racing wheelchairs prompted Sopur to also enter the wheelchair business. In 1992 Sopur GmbH had 170 employees.
1992 until today
In 1992 Sopur GmbH was sold to the American medical device group Sunrise Medical Inc. Sunrise Medical Inc. was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado / USA . The company is the market leader in the United States in the development, manufacture and sale of rehabilitation products. At its locations, Sunrise Medical Inc. researches and develops innovations in the mobility sector and produces and sells a wide range of medical product brands, including special wheelchairs for disabled sports.
Since 1996 the company has been developing and producing a. also handbikes, for mass and competitive sports for physically disabled athletes.
In November 2012, funds advised by Equistone Partners Europe and headquartered in Munich become the main shareholders of the Sunrise Medical Group. Since then, the company based in Malsch, Baden-Württemberg, has grown through acquisitions. Sunrise Medical strengthened its range of driving control and control elements as well as sports and basketball wheelchairs through the acquisition of Switch It and RGK Wheelchair Ltd.
On June 11, 2015, the group announced that Nordic Capital had acquired the Sunrise Medical group from Equistone Partners. At the beginning of August 2015, the company bought the Mobility division from Handicare, headquartered in Helmond, Netherlands.
Team Sunrise
The Sunrise team was founded in 1987 to promote wheelchair sports and the development of the necessary technical equipment. Today, the team is supported by Sunrise Medical together with Audi driving aids and the Schwalbe company, under the leadership of multiple Paralympic winner Errol Marklein .

In 2015 the racing wheelchair user Alhassane Baldé joined the team.
At the Summer Paralympics 2012 in London, Team Sopur athlete Vico Merklein won the silver medal in the handbike road race. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, he won the gold medal in the same discipline.
Vico Merklein set a new record in his racing class at the International Heidelberg Wheelchair Marathon 2013.
At the Paracycling World Championships in 2015 in Nottwil, Vico Merklein won the silver medal twice in his racing class in the time trial and in the road race.
