Winfried Sigg
Winfried Sigg (born December 29, 1961 ) is a German disabled athlete .
Career
Winfried Sigg is paraplegic and has been in a wheelchair since he had a motorcycle accident at the age of 18. Despite his disability, he not only wanted to be active in sports, but also to do competitive sports. He chose athletics as a sports discipline, but was initially also active as a swimmer.
Because of his good performance, Sigg was appointed to the German national team for handicapped people. At the 1984 Summer Paralympics , he swam different distances in starting class 2 and won a silver medal over 50 m breaststroke. In 1988 he started at the Summer Paralympics in Seoul and won the gold medal in the 4 x 400 m with the German athletics relay team ( Robert Figl , Gregor Golombek, Wolfgang Petersen). He finished seventh in the marathon (group 2). At the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona, he and the German relay team (Robert Figl, Guido Müller, Markus Pilz ) won gold over 4 x 100 m and bronze over 4 x 400 m (class TW3-4). He also took part in the 1996 Summer Paralympic Games in Atlanta , where he competed in the 400 m wheelchair race in 52.43 seconds in the T52 class and won the gold medal. For this success he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by the Federal President . At the IPC Athletics World Championships 1998 in Birmingham Sigg was able to achieve a silver medal over 800 m in the T54 class . In the same year he was third in the wheelchair competition of the Berlin Marathon . In 2000 he took part in the Summer Paralympics in Sydney , but did not get any medals, his best result was 6th place over 800 m (class T53 ).
Sigg no longer takes part in the Paralympics, but still drives handbike races . He was part of the Sopur team, which is sponsored by the wheelchair manufacturer Sunrise Medical , for which Sigg has been working as a product advisor since 1992. He is an ambassador for the MyHandicap Foundation .
Sigg lives in Arnach and has a son.
