Markus Pilz

Markus Pilz (born May 18, 1962 ; † October 3, 2014 in Kreuztal ) was a German wheelchair athlete .

Since the age of 16 due to a moped -Unfalls paraplegic who became from the Siegen district Geisweid originating and Meiswinkel resident mushroom in the 1990s to one of the most successful disabled athletes. In 1990 and 1991 he won the Hamburg marathon in the wheelchair class. In 1991 he became world champion in Tokyo over the 1500-meter course , setting a world record. At the Paralympics in Barcelona in 1992, he won the gold medal over 400 meters in a new world record time of 51.93 s. He also set a new world record with the German 4 x 100 meter relay with a time of 55.63 s and won gold. He also added a silver medal over 5000 meters and a bronze medal over 10,000 meters and with the 4-by-400-meter relay to his trophy collection at this Paralympics participation. In 1996 he won another silver medal over 400 meters at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta . In 1993, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker awarded Pilz the silver bay leaf . The mushroom starting for the BSG Ferndorf was voted Sportsman of the Year in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992 .

Pilz died at the age of 52 when he was hit by a car with his hand bike on a training trip in the Kreuztal district of Eichen and suffered fatal injuries. He was married to the athlete Anke Breitenbach (German indoor youth champion 1986, German junior champion 1989 and 1990) and left behind his wife a 16-year-old daughter.
