Alfredo Pires

Alfredo Pires (* 1964 in Lolotoe , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese politician and member of the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense (CNRT).

education

Pires holds a degree in Applied Geology from Ballarat University, Australia and a degree in Business Administration and Japanese Studies from the University of Macau . He also graduated from the University of New South Wales' Diplomacy Training Program . Pires is fluent in Tetum , Portuguese , English and has a basic command of Japanese .

Political activity

Pires has been a natural resource advisor to Xanana Gusmão since 2002 when he was President of East Timor .

Since August 8, 2007, he has been State Secretary for Natural Resources in the Xanana Gusmão cabinet . The minister of Natural Resources, Minerals and Energy had Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão held.

As State Secretary, Pires founded the National Authority for Petroleum and Minerals ( Autoridade Nacional do Petróleo e Minerais ANPM ) on August 4, 2008 , as well as a National Oil Company and Institute for Petroleum and Geology (IPG). In the government he advocates more transparency in politics so that the population is better informed about oil production and the use of the funds. Pires is also committed to investing in the East Timorese economy to prepare for the post-oil era.

With the accession of the fifth East Timorese government on August 8, 2012, Pires himself took over the office of Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources. When the CNRT went into opposition after the 2017 elections , Pires lost his ministerial office when he entered the VII government on September 15, 2017. Pires is nominated as petroleum minister of the VIII government , but he stayed away from the two previous swearing-in ceremonies due to a dispute to nominate other cabinet members.

family

Alfredo Pires is the brother of Emília Pires , the former Minister for Planning and Finance of East Timor. There are three other siblings: Aurora Pires is a nun and teaches in a Catholic kindergarten. Palmira Pires runs a non-profit training agency. Fernando Pires works for an international aid organization. The father's name was Alfredo Manuel Pires and was for a time the district administrator of Bobonaro .
