Hammelburg city fortifications

The city ​​fortification in Hammelburg , a small town in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen , was built in the 13th century. The city ​​fortification is a protected architectural monument .

The city fortification was built under Heinrich IV. Von Erthal , the prince abbot of the Fulda monastery (see also: History of Hammelburg ). It is first mentioned in 1242 and was completed around 1260. The city ​​wall consisted of quarry stone masonry with a thickness of up to 1.5 m. The Zwingermauer is significantly narrower and is now partly covered with younger buildings. Of the three city ​​gates : Weihertor in the west, Oberes Tor in the east and Niedertor in the north, none has been preserved. They were demolished after the city fire of 1854. The gates all had gate towers .

Of the original eleven towers are preserved three: Bader tower , keepers tower and monk storm .
