The University of Conakry , French Université Gamal Abdel Nasser de Conakry (UGANC), is the largest university in Guinea . It was founded in 1962 as the "Institut Polytechnique" (Polytechnic Institute) for 1,500 students in the Donka district and named in 1970 after Gamal Abdel Nasser . In 2001 the university had 8,360 students and 401 employees, in 2010 there were 16,000 students and 540 employees.

In 2003 the humanities faculties were outsourced to the campus in Sonfania (on the outskirts of Conakry ). On January 14, 2004, this campus became the second state comprehensive university in Conakry and was named Université Général Lansana Conté de Sonfonia in honor of Lansana Conté .
