Albert Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith Patabendige Don (born November 15, 1947 in Polgahawela , Sri Lanka ) is Archbishop of Colombo .

Life

Albert Malcolm Ranjith studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Diocesan Seminary as well as at the Pontifical Urban University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He received on June 29, 1975 in Rome through Pope Paul VI. the sacrament of ordination .

On 17 June 1991 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Cabarsussi and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Colombo . He received episcopal ordination on August 31 of the same year by the Archbishop of Colombo, Nicholas Marcus Fernando . On November 2, 1995, John Paul II made him head of the Diocese of Ratnapura .

On October 1, 2001, he was appointed Curia Bishop of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . On April 29, 2004, John Paul II appointed him titular Archbishop of Umbriatico and appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio in Indonesia and East Timor .

Pope Benedict XVI called him back to the Roman Curia on December 10, 2005 as Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments . Archbishop Ranjith criticizes the practice of communion in hand , which is accompanied by "an increasing weakening of a reverential attitude towards the most holy of holies", and says that the Catholic Church should reconsider the decision to allow communion in hand.

Archbishop Ranjith speaks fluent German and, as a chaplain, had regularly taken on vacation replacements in Germany, where one of his sisters also lives. In 2008 he consecrated eight deacons in Wigratzbad in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite and celebrated a pontifical mass on the Assumption of Mary in the pilgrimage site of Maria Vesperbild .

On June 16, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. to the Archbishop of Colombo. The inauguration took place on August 5, 2009.

In the consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina in the college of cardinals .

He was a participant in the 2013 conclave elected by Pope Francis .
