Alessandro Cardinal Verde (born March 27, 1865 in Sant'Antimo , Province of Naples , Italy , † March 29, 1958 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Alessandro Verde first attended the seminary in Aversa and then studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Rome . He received his doctorate in theology in 1890 and in civil law and canon law in 1893 . On March 31, 1888, he received the sacrament of ordination and, after completing his studies, worked as a pastor in the Diocese of Rome . In 1897 he received the title of Pontifical Private Treasurer, from 1902 he was in the service of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Consistorial Congregation. In the same year he was awarded the title of Papal House Prelate. In 1905 he became Apostolic Protonotary and Canon of the Patriarchal Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano .

On June 26, 1915, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . as secretary of the Congregation for Rites , in 1916 canon of the Vatican Basilica , Pope Pius XI. accepted Alessandro Verde on December 14, 1925 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santa Maria in Cosmedin in the cardinals college. While maintaining his title diakonia, he was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice in 1935 . Cardinal Verde attended the 1939 conclave . In October of the same year he was appointed by the new Pope Pius XII. appointed Archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . In 1952 he became a cardinal proto-priest .

Alessandro Verde died on March 29, 1958 at the age of 93 in Rome and was buried in his birthplace. When he died he was the oldest living cardinal.
