The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Nienburg / Weser.
The nature reserve is located east of Nienburg and is surrounded by the terminal moraines of the crow. It provides a high moor area under protection, which in a in a moraine has formed recessed trough of today's crows Moores. The moor is predominantly characterized by birch - pine - moor forest and pipegrass stands.
The Bunkenmoor is traversed by the Schiffgraben, which drains the area via the Führser Mühlbach to the Weser . In the area of the Schiffgraben there are artificially created still waters that develop in a natural way and are important for endangered animal species such as amphibians. The moor areas are to be regenerated by restoring the water conditions typical of the site.
