The Kokenmühle is a watermill with a mill pond on the river Aue , a sand-shaped lowland brook , in the Visbeker peasantry Endel , in the district of Vechta , in the Lower Saxony region of Oldenburger Münsterland , with part of the mill area located in the Emsteker municipality in the district of Cloppenburg . The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1540.

Today's mill

The mill, built on a foundation of mighty field stones in oak framework and red brick, has a medium-sized water wheel from 1893 with a diameter of nine meters, which has been used to generate electricity since the mill was rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II. A sawmill from the 19th century attached to the mill is still functional today. After extensive renovation in 1981, the mill building is now used as a venue for celebrations. The Kokenmühle has been a station on the Lower Saxony Mühlenstrasse since 2008 .

History of the coke mill

The hydroelectric coke mill - originally a grain mill with eel catching and storage rights - has been owned by the Koke family since 1540, currently under the ownership of Maria Koke. A new water mill was built in 1590 and renewed in 1735. In 1845 a sawmill was added to the flour mill, which is still functional today. In 1945 the mill building was destroyed by bombing and then rebuilt. Since then, the mill has been used to generate electricity.

Location and surroundings

The mill is at a height of 34  m above sea level. NN in charming rural surroundings right on the edge of the nature reserve " Bäken der Endeler and Holzhauser Heide ", while the mill pond and the river Aue are already within the nature reserve. Extensive forests surround the mill. The large stone grave heath sacrificial table dating back to the Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture (TBK) (3500–2800 BC) is within walking distance of the single farmstead and the Engelmannsbäke inn . Another large stone grave, the so-called Visbeker groom, is located in the immediate vicinity of the heathen sacrificial table . The tombs are easily accessible from the street of the megalithic culture , a cultural route of the Council of Europe , opened in May 2009 .

Geographical features

The mill building itself is right on the border, but outside the Visbek municipality, and also outside the nature reserve, namely in the Gartherfeld corridor in the area of ​​the municipality of Emstek , district of Cloppenburg . The mill pond, the river Aue and the Koke farm are all located within the Visbeck municipality in the Endel farmers and - with the exception of the Koke farm itself - also within the nature reserve. The three districts of Vechta , Cloppenburg and Oldenburg border each other at the confluence of the Landwehrbäke with the floodplain north of the Kokenmühle .
