State Committee for the State of Emergency
The State Committee on the State of Emergency ( Russian Государственный комитет по чрезвычайному положению ; ГКЧП / GKTschP) was a group of conservative and reactionary Soviet officials that the 1991 August coup against Mikhail Gorbachev conducted.

Fate of the putschists
After the failure of the coup, Boris Pugo evaded arrest by suicide . The other members of the committee were removed from their offices and charged after the collapse of the Soviet Union . The Russian State Duma granted her amnesty in 1994. Army General Valentin Ivanovich Varennikov , who was not a member of the committee, refused to grant the amnesty and was acquitted because of a lack of orders.
Object ABZ
The preparations of the coup plotters took place in the secret guest residence ABZ (архивно-библиотечный центр) of the KGB, which is located in the southwest of Moscow.
