Hauenhorst lies at the foot of the forest hill and extends in the east to the Ems. It borders on Mesum , St. Arnold and Catenhorn. The Frischebach and the Frischhofsbach flow through Hauenhorst .
history
Until the beginning of the 20th century, Hauenhorst consisted only of a few loose farm groups around the Hauenhorster Esch and an elongated court row in the middle of the Catenhorn Esch corridors. It was only with the expansion of the “Rheine R” marshalling yard from 1918 and the Rheine depot there that the first housing developments emerged, which expanded considerably, especially after the Second World War. Until 1984 the place was connected to the Duisburg – Quakenbrück railway line . Today the RadBahn Münsterland runs along this route , a cycle path between Rheine and Coesfeld .
The developed settlement is now easily accessible from two district roads. The nearby B 70 bypass takes you quickly to the A 30 , part of the important European connection between Berlin and Amsterdam.
Hauenhorst is particularly characterized by its lively club and sports life.
schools
In Hauenhorst there are no other educational institutions apart from the Marien-Grundschule.

To the east of the town center there are some businesses. Smaller shopping opportunities are available for everyday shopping. A general practitioner and dentist, a lottery shop and two restaurants, as well as a pizzeria with fast food, are all centrally located. The only pharmacy in town closed in spring 2019.
church
Since 2012, Hauenhorst has been part of the parish association of St. John the Baptist , consisting of the formerly independent communities of Hauenhorst, Elte (St. Ludgerus) and Mesum (St. Johannes Baptist). The church of St. Mary's Visitation from the end of the 19th century is the successor to two previous chapels. As the work of the German-Dutch architect Franz Klomp , who built the St. Antonius Basilica in Rheine at the same time as the new building in Hauenhorst , the church in Hauenhorst is a nationally significant testimony to rural church architecture in Westphalia.
Historic courtyard
In the middle of the village, the Heimatverein Hauenhorst / Catenhorn eV has built a historic, typical Münsterland courtyard since 1988. First, the Berninghoff bakery was rebuilt on the site. This was followed by the Kötterhaus Storm, the Hüerhues Löckemann, the barn Oortmann and a remise from Hof Deupmann. All buildings in the neighboring Catenhorn farmers were demolished and rebuilt on the site on the village square. In the meantime, an apiary , a small coach house and an insect hotel have also been built.
