Plan of the former Rheine-Coesfeld railway line

The RadBahn Münsterland is a 39.4 km long railway cycle path on the former route from Rheine to Coesfeld (former route book route 284), a section of the Duisburg – Quakenbrück railway . The name of the cycle path was given in autumn 2011 and replaces the previous project name Schlossallee cycle path Rheine - Coesfeld .

After operations for local passenger traffic ended in 1984 and finally also in 1999 for freight traffic, the former railroad tracks were quickly overgrown with grass, bushes and trees.

In 2008, the neighboring cities and communities decided to buy the disused railway line and convert it into a cycle path. This was also supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The construction costs amounted to around 6.4 million euros, of which the state took over 5.2 million euros.

The barriers have stopped at the former Hessenweg level crossing in Hauenhorst
Cycle path in Rheine-Hauenhorst, the closure has been lifted since December 20, 2012.

Routing

The RadBahn Münsterland has been completed as a railway cycle path from Rheine (Staelskottenweg) to Billerbeck-Lutum . It was on May 5, 2013 at the new generation Park Darfeld , the old Darfelder , officially opened the station with a big party. The first construction phase to Steinfurt had already been opened on August 9, 2009 in the St. Arnold train station (formerly Neuenkirchen Land), the second section to Horstmar , which has been passable since autumn 2011, on April 25, 2012. The third construction phase to Lutum was officially approved on September 21, 2012. The section from Rheine-Hauenhorst to Staelskottenweg in Rheine has been accessible since December 20, 2012 ; the route leads over the site of the former Rheine depot . This means that the RadBahn can now be used as far as Rheine without detours. From Lutum the railway line is still in operation. Therefore, the existing cycle path network will be used for the continuation of the Münsterland RadBahn to Coesfeld.

The length of 39.4 km refers to the upgraded line between the Münster - Coesfeld and Münster - Rheine railway lines that are still being used. For the entire Coesfeld - Rheine route, as it is marketed today, add approx. 8 km from Coesfeld to Lutum and approx. 4 km from Hauenhorst to Rheine.

Furnishing

The bike path is three meters wide and covered with a smooth layer of asphalt, which also makes it interesting for inline skaters . In addition, many projects are being planned or have already been completed. You can take a break at a so-called Melkhus to try different milk dishes. In addition, benches were set up in some places.

The station buildings are still preserved, and new uses are possible thanks to this cycle path. There are also some interesting bridge structures, almost all of which have been or are being restored. At the St. Arnold train station , rails are left behind; the railway association ECN Nordwestmünsterland e. V. organizes trips there with a historic trolley . Since 2013, the association has organized an annual draisine championship. You can also see old rail tools there. Gradually, a railway museum is to be built.
