Melkhus ( nds. For Milchhaus ) is the legally protected name for rest stops, which in the north and west of Lower Saxony as well as in Schleswig-Holstein mainly on various long -distance cycle or cycle paths (including the cycle path Hamburg-Bremen , Weser cycle path , Wümme cycle path ) but also on numerous regional cycle routes, mostly on farms and where rural women offer milk specialties . In this way, cyclists and walkers can fortify themselves with a glass of fresh milk, mixed milk beverages, quark dishes or even with a coffee, while also receiving an insight into today's agriculture and tourist tips for their onward journey. Business operations are often carried out using a trust fund . The "official" Melkhüs, which are run by the Landesvereinigung der Milchwirtschaft Niedersachsen e. V. are usually open daily between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. from April to the end of September and can be recognized by the green wooden house with a red tiled roof.

In Schleswig-Holstein, the red-painted milking huts there are operated independently by the respective farms, the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture only supports the planning and then takes over central marketing.

The idea, which today gives many farmers in Lower Saxony an additional small income, was developed in 2001 by the late farmer Friedel Schumacher from Rheiderland together with her daughter Frauke. There are now over 75 of the small huts between the Dutch border, the upper Wümmeniederung , the North Sea coast and Bad Bentheim . The two southernmost Melkhüs are in Einbeck and Glentorf in the Helmstedt district. There is also the Lower Saxony Milky Way Stade with 13 participating dairy farms.

designation

The naming of the institutions varies depending on the route and region. Nowadays, Melkhus is mostly used as the singular , but the term Mölkstand is common in Ammerland . In the plural are Melkhüs and: in Rheiderland and at Dollart Melkhuske , in the district of Wittmund Melkhuskes , in Emsland Melkhüsken , in the county of Bentheim Melkhuisken .
