Odo of Châteauroux
Odo von Châteauroux (French: Eudes de Châteauroux ; * around 1190 in Châteauroux ; † January 25, 1273 in Orvieto ) was a French theologian and Roman Catholic cardinal .
Life
Odo belonged to the order of the Franciscans and was canon of Notre-Dame in Paris . He became a master of theology and was Chancellor of the University of Paris from 1238 to 1244 . In this function he made the acquaintance of King Louis IX. and supported him in persecuting the Talmud in 1240 . In 1244 Odo was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati by Pope Innocent IV and in 1245 at the Council of Lyons he was appointed papal legate for the sixth crusade . In preparation for the crusade, he worked in France as a mediator in the Flemish War of Succession, which was temporarily ended in 1246. He was instructed by the Pope to appeal to the king for an end to the Talmudic burnings, which he successfully opposed. On Whit Friday June 12, 1248 Odo handed in Saint-Denis to the king the Oriflamme and then spoke at the general chapter of the Franciscans in Sens , one of the participants there was, among other Salimbene of Parma . This was followed by the departure from Aigues-Mortes to the Orient.
After his return from the crusade in 1254, Odo wrote a comprehensive report on the crusade for the Pope, which has not yet been subjected to any scientific analysis.
