Floskelwolke is a web project founded in 2014 by journalists Sebastian Pertsch and Udo Stiehl that criticizes empty phrases , phrases and formulations in German-language news texts and analyzes their frequency in the media on a daily basis. In March 2016 they published a non-fiction book with Piper Verlag .
approach
An algorithm examines 2000 media pages from Germany, Switzerland and Austria every day for similarities with the database of the phrase cloud and uses this to create a ranking of the most frequently used phrases. This ranking is published as a keyword cloud and in bar charts both on the website of the phrase cloud and on accounts in social networks .
On the website of the phrase cloud, the phrases are divided into three categories. The phrase cloud distinguishes between standard phrases that are often used but cause “no damage in terms of content”, misleading phrases that contribute to “devaluing journalistic texts and endangering credibility”, as well as launched or propagandistic-manipulative phrases that “disguise contexts , Glossing over facts or influencing opinions ”.

Floskelwolke was the first winner of the Günter Wallraff Prize for journalism criticism in 2015 ; It was emphasized that the phrase cloud "draws attention to inadequacies, errors and manipulations in the language of the message in an innovative way". Cloud attacks phrase in the backend on MySQL and PHP and frontend on HTML5 , jQuery and Bootstrap back. Wordcloud2.js is used for the output of the keyword cloud as a canvas element and Piwik is used for the collection of user statistics.
