Jean Jourlin

Jean Jourlin (born December 1, 1904 in Tarare , Département Rhône , † October 20, 1979 in Bry-sur-Marne ) was a French wrestler . He was European middleweight champion in free style in 1933.

Career

Jean Jourlin developed into a top French wrestler in the early 1920s. He started in the national framework both in the free and in the Greco-Roman style. But he achieved his international success almost exclusively in free style.

He won his first French championship in 1926 in Greco-Roman. Style. In the free style he won his first French championship in 1927. By the end of his career he had won a total of 15 French championship titles in both styles. He was successful in four different weight classes, from lightweight to light-heavyweight.

In 1927 he started for the first time at an international championship, the European championship in Budapest . This championship was in Greco-Roman. Style carried out and Jean Jourlin came there in the middleweight division with one win and two losses in 6th place. In 1928 he took part in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam . In the welterweight he got there in free style two wins, against the top three winners of this Olympic tournament, Lloyd Appleton from the United States, Maurice Letchford from Canada and Arvo Haavisto from Finland but he lost and came in 4th place.

European championships have been held in free style since 1929. Jean Jourlin started in Brussels in 1930 for the first time at such a European Championship. In welterweight he won it against Algot Malmberg from Sweden and lost to Hyacinthe Roosen from Belgium , which he reached 6th place like in Budapest.

Only a small French team took part in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Only five French wrestlers started in both styles. Jean Jourlin wasn't there. For this, he succeeded in 1933 at the European Championships in Paris the biggest success of his career, because he was in the middleweight division with wins over Ernst Krebs from Switzerland , Rene Vanderveeken from Belgium and Stanley Bissell from the UK European champion .

At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1934 , he lost to Elis Wecksten from Finland and Ivar Johansson (wrestler) from Sweden and ended up in 4th place with only five participants. In 1936 he took part in the Olympic Games in Berlin for the second time. He managed a surprise victory over the German Josef Paar in the welterweight division , which he threw out of the competition. Due to a defeat against the Swede Ture Andersson , he too had to retire and with the 4th place just missed an Olympic medal.

In 1937 he took part in the European Championship in Greco-Roman in Paris . Style part. He started there in the welterweight division and came to a victory over Walter Massop from the Netherlands, while he lost to Edgar Puusepp from Estonia and Fritz Schäfer from Germany. He finished 4th once again. At the European Free Style Championship in Munich in 1937 , he took part in an international championship for the last time. He was very unlucky in the middleweight division, because after beating the strong Swiss Paul Dätwyler he had to give up injured.

Jean Jourlin wrestled at national level until 1945 and even won the French championship title in both styles again that year. From 1946 until the end of the 1950s he worked mainly in France and England as a professional wrestler (catcher).
