Nikolaus Kindlinger

Johannes Nikolaus Kindlinger (born February 17, 1749 in Neudorf im Rheingau ; † September 15, 1819 in Mainz ) was a German Catholic priest , collector of manuscripts and seals, archivist , editor and writer.

Life

After studying in Mainz, he joined the Franciscan Order (religious name Venantius ) and stayed in its Münster branch until 1790. Already there he performed archival tasks and carried out historical studies. As a result, he was asked to look through various Westphalian aristocratic archives and to organize them for the first time. The archives of the cathedral chapters of Münster and Paderborn and the beginning of the processing of the archives of the Electorate of Cologne were in his hands. After leaving the order with papal approval, he became the last archivist of the Essen and Corvey monasteries .

At the beginning of the 19th century he became a pastor in his hometown in order to become briefly archivist of Wilhelm von Orange , the Prince of Fulda , very soon .

Considering a pension, he moved to Mainz, where he died in 1819.

As the father of the Münsterland historical research , he mainly devoted himself to the sources of this region.
