Umeshu ( Japanese 梅酒 ) is a Japanese liqueur made from the ume apricot . In Japan this is drunk cold or warm, mainly in summer. It's sweet or sweet and sour, and there is often an ume at the bottom of the bottle. It tastes very mild and is also consumed by people who otherwise tend not to drink alcohol. Similar products are made in Korea and are called maesil-ju , mae hwa su or mae chui soon there . In China , a comparable drink is offered under the name 梅酒 , méi jiǔ .

Umeshu is often referred to as "plum wine", although it is not made from plums (ume is related to apricot and belongs to the Armeniaca section within the genus Prunus ), and is not made like wine. Inexpensive products are, however, made on the basis of white wine ("flavored wine-containing drink").
