Sorin Ghionea (born May 11, 1979 in Galați , Galați County ) is a former Romanian football player . He played a total of 304 games in the Romanian League 1 and the Russian Premier League . In 2005 and 2006 he won the Romanian championship with Steaua Bucharest .

Club career

At the age of 12 Ghionea joined his hometown club Dunărea Galați and stayed there in the youth team until he was used for the first time in the second division team at 18. There he played 15 games and managed to stay with the team at the end of the 1997/98 season. Then he got the opportunity to move to local rivals Oțelul Galați , who played in the top Romanian league.

Although he was regularly used at his new club in the following years, it was not until his fourth year at Oțelul that he became a regular. As a result, the Romanian top club and record champions Steaua Bucharest became aware of him and signed him for the 2002/03 season. After he had played in the middle of the table until then, he was runner-up with Steaua for the first time, but was only used six times and could not prevail. Therefore, he was loaned from the capital club the following year to his old club Oțelul Galați, where he was again part of the team.

In 2004 he returned to Bucharest, where he found a congenial partner in central defense in Dorin Goian . With only 18 goals conceded in 30 games this season, Steaua won the championship and secured participation in the Champions League qualification. Even if they left there prematurely, another very successful season followed, which ended with the defense of the championship title with only 16 goals conceded.

The 2006/07 season started again very promisingly for Ghionea, as the group stage was reached for the first time in the Champions League. There they were eliminated against Real Madrid and Olympique Lyon .

In February 2007, he sustained a knee injury that would not heal. Even after an operation, there was no improvement and there was even talk of the end of his career, but that did not happen. Without him, Steaua landed behind local rivals Rapid Bucharest in second place in the championship and the capitals had to do without him in the first half of the coming season. Then Ghionea managed to return to the team and was able to celebrate another runner-up in 2008. Before the start of the second half of the 2009/10 season he moved to the Russian first division club FK Rostow . With his new club he was able to place in the midfield of the Premjer League in the 2010 season.

At the beginning of 2011 Ghionea returned to Romania and has played for FC Timișoara ever since . With his new team he was runner-up behind Oțelul Galați at the end of the 2010/11 season . However, his club was not approved for the 2011/12 season and had to be relegated to Liga II . He then moved to the first division club FCM Târgu Mureş . After relegation in 2012, he was drawn to league rivals CS Concordia Chiajna . A year later he joined the league rivals FC Viitorul Constanța . In November 2013, his contract was terminated. He then ended his active career.

National team

His breakthrough in the 2001/02 season at Oțelul Galați also led to a nomination for the national team . It was first used against Ukraine on March 27, 2002. After that he played friendlies for the national team from time to time. It was not until 2006 that he was used three times in the World Cup qualification, but was then not called into the World Cup squad.

His long injury also interrupted his national team career and although he played in the national jersey shortly after the World Cup, after convincing league performances he was called up to Romania's EM squad for the 2008 European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland. In the preparatory game against Montenegro on May 31, 2008, he was substituted on in the second half and was able to report back successfully with his only national team goal. In total, Ghionea made 13 international matches by 2008.
