ASA Târgu Mureş is a Romanian football club from Târgu Mureş . He has been playing in the second Romanian division, Liga II , since 2017 .

history

The Fotbal Club Municipal Târgu Mureş (German Municipal Football Club Târgu Mureş ) was founded in 2008 as the successor to the third division club Trans-Sil Târgu Mureş . After a merger with Forex Brașov failed in June 2008 , the club bought the place from Unirea Sânnicolau Mare in Liga II instead . It is financially supported by the city of Târgu Mureş and is supposed to follow the tradition of AS Armata Târgu Mureş and CS Târgu Mureş which both no longer exist, but have played in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A , for years.

In the first year of its existence, the club under the coach Cosmin Bodea only just missed promotion to League 1. In the following year, Bodea was dismissed after the 27th match day when promotion to League 1 seemed threatened. Under the successor Adrian Falub , the FCM got seven wins in the remaining seven games of the season, although two of these games were not played because of the withdrawal of the opposing teams. After just six matchdays in the top division of the 2010/11 season , the club parted ways with their promotion coach Falub and replaced him with Ioan Sabau , with whom he was able to place himself in the middle of the table. On September 26, 2011 Sabau resigned from his position after the club had scored only six points in the first eight league games in the 2011/12 season and was also involved in a referee scandal. His successor was Tibor Selymes , who had his contract terminated after four matchdays on November 2, 2011. On November 3, 2011, the Italian Maurizio Trombetta was the new coach of the club, but already on January 20, 2012 it came to a separation after the club's management had refused to comply with additional financial demands Trombetta. As his successor, Marius Lăcătuș was introduced on January 21, 2012 . After three games without a win in the second half of the 2011/12 season, Lăcătuș was released on March 18, 2012 and replaced by returnees Ioan Sabău. At the end of the season, the club had to be relegated to 15th place.

In the summer of 2013, the club changed its name to ASA Târgu Mureş based on the previous club AS Armata Târgu Mureş . He finished the 2013/14 season in second place in Season 2 of League II and returned to the House of Lords. During the season they defeated Steaua Bucharest 1-0 in both games, but narrowly missed the historic title in the end, because they have never been a promoted champion. In the following Europa League season they played against AS Saint-Etienne . After a 3-0 home defeat and a 2-1 away win, they were eliminated directly.
