Tecuci is a town in the Galați district in western Moldova in Romania .

Location of Tecuci in Galați County

Located in the south of the historical region of the Principality of Moldova (Principatul Moldovei) , Tecuci is located on wooded hills on the Bârlad River and about 10 kilometers east of the Sereth River. The place is on the European route E 581 (Mărăşeşti – Odessa) between Mărăşeşti and Bârlad . The railway lines from Galați – Bârlad and Făurei – Tecuci meet in the city. The district capital Galați is 78 kilometers southeast of Tecuci.

The history of settlement in the region goes back to the Neolithic . In the area of Tecuci numerous finds from the Neolithic period and dwellings that point to the La Tène period have been made during archaeological excavations . In the west of the place - at the airfield - necropolises of the Middle Ages with a diameter of 4.60 meters and a height of 1.50 meters were found; these were leveled in 1938. According to the Moldovan chronicler Grigore Ureche (1590–1647), the Moldovan voivode Ștefan cel Mare had set up camp for three days in a battle against the Turks on a hill - called Movila Mare by the locals . The first written mention of the town of Tecuci comes from 1435.

In 2002 the city of Tecuci had 42,094 inhabitants; 40,467 of them were Romanians , 24 were Hungarians , 5 were German, and 1,540 were Roma . In addition, Ukrainians (2), Lipovans (2), Turks (2), Serbs (1), Bulgarians (2), Greeks (5), Jews (15), Italians (2) and 25 of other nationalities were also registered. In 1900 there were only 13,401 inhabitants.
