In the further course of the revolution he ignored the orders of Ceauşescu, which enabled the numerous citizens demonstrating against the regime in the capital Bucharest to take control. Promoted to acting defense minister, Stănculescu organized the show trial against the couple Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu on December 25, 1989 . On December 28, 1989, Stănculescu was appointed Minister of Economy by Ion Iliescu in thanks for his loyalty , and was promoted to Lieutenant General. From February 1990 to April 30, 1991 he was Minister of Defense. In May 1991 he was promoted to general and released into the reserve.

On October 16, 2008, Stănculescu and another high-ranking general, the former Interior Minister Mihai Chițac , were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for serious manslaughter by the Romanian Supreme Court in connection with the shooting of protesters in Timișoara during the Romanian Revolution in 1989 . After 5 years, a third of the sentence, Stănculescu was released on May 20, 2014. On March 24, 2015, the European Court of Human Rights dismissed Stănculescus and the widow of Chițac, who died in 2010, as inadmissible because of the inappropriateness of the proceedings.
