The Winterthur loop , also called Winterthur control , is part of the external Heusinger control of a steam locomotive . Executed for the first time by the Swiss Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik Winterthur , it is a variant of the Kuhn loop and functions in a similar way.

The "Aquarius C" locomotive has a Winterthur loop.

How it works and how it differs from the Kuhn loop

The controls with Kuhn's loops often cause space problems, because the loop and the control shaft with the throwing lever are located behind the rocker arm. When using a Winterthur loop, there are no such problems, because loop, control shaft and lifting lever take up the same space that the slide pushrod takes up alone in a Kuhn loop. The Winterthur loop is in front of the swing arm and the lifting lever is rotatably attached to the center of the swing arm and has a weight behind the loop. The grindstone is attached to the lifting lever, in front of the swing arm in the loop. Behind the loop, the slide push rod leads into the swing arm.
