life and work

Fanita English spent her childhood and youth in Istanbul. She studied psychology a. a. with Jean Piaget and in Paris. The daughter of Jewish parents fled to the USA via several stops, where she earned an MA in Social Work. She completed training in psychoanalysis , gestalt therapy (with Fritz Perls ) and transaction analysis (with Eric Berne and David Kupfer). She founded the Eastern Institute for TA and Gestalt .

In contrast to Sigmund Freud , English postulates three basic instincts - survival instinct, instinct to create, and instinct for rest. These are in a homeostatic equilibrium (cf. Humberto Maturana ), just like the organs in an organism interact. Fanita English combines in-depth analytical procedures with behavioral and experience-oriented concepts. She differentiates between a euphoric narcissistic ok feeling and a realistic worldview that can only develop after overcoming the Oedipus complex. She has also developed new concepts for the triangular contract and for the phase-specific subsystems in the child-ego state.

Her daughter Deirdre English works as a journalist. Fanita English lives in San Mateo , California .
