Julius Jacob the Elder

Isaac Julius Jacob , the Elder (born April 25, 1811 in Berlin ; † October 20, 1882 there ) was a German history, portrait and still life painter .

Life and artistic career

Jacob studied from 1828 at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and was a student in Wilhelm Wach's studio . Between 1830 and 1848 he regularly took part in the exhibitions of the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin. From 1833 to 1836 he studied at the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf . Between 1837 and 1844 there was a stay in Paris, studying with Paul Delaroche and regularly participating in the Paris Salon .

After traveling in Europe, Asia Minor, North America and Africa, as well as making a large number of sketches, copies and portraits, he was appointed a member of the Société des beaux-arts (Society of Fine Arts) de Paris in 1844. He exhibited several pictures from the history of Louis the Saint , which led to commissions for the Palace in Versailles . However, Jacob did not come to this because he received an extensive portrait order from London . His paintings became very popular in England and led to many new commissions. So he finally stayed in London for eleven years and took part in the exhibitions of the Royal Academy London in 1845, 1847–1854 with a total of 16 portraits. After a stay in Rome in 1850/1851 during the winter months and after a stay in Vienna in 1854 , where he also portrayed numerous princely personalities at the instigation of Carl Rahl , he returned to Berlin as a result of the war of 1866 and stayed there until the end of his life. He lived in Oberwasserstraße 10. He was married and his son was the painter Julius Jacob the Younger .
