Julius Jacob the Younger
Julius Jacob the Younger (born October 26, 1842 in Berlin ; † April 25, 1929 there ) was a German architecture and landscape painter who primarily devoted himself to depictions of Berlin's old town and the Mark Brandenburg region .
Life
Julius Jacob, son of the history painter of the same name , trained in the studio of Karl Wilhelm Gropius , court theater painter for the Berlin theaters, and then worked there as a backdrop painter. For further training he attended the Berlin Academy of the Arts and also undertook several study trips to Italy . From 1882 he worked as a lecturer for landscape drawing and watercolor painting , first at the Berlin Building Academy , and then at the Technical University of Charlottenburg .
Jacob's landscapes were influenced by the art of Carl Blechen and the Barbizon painting school . His first cityscapes of Berlin were soon successful, which is why he devoted himself to depictions of Berlin's old town and the gradually growing city. Between 1862 and 1885 u. a. a watercolor cycle of 70 views of Berlin, which established his reputation as a chronicler of the gradually disappearing old Berlin . The painting of Wilhelmplatz in Berlin from 1886 is one of his most famous works. It shows the newly built Hotel Kaiserhof and a baroque palace . The staffage in the foreground includes u. a. the " Spreewald wet nurses ", who were a familiar sight in everyday life in Berlin at the time.
Exhibitions
From May to July 1979 there was an exhibition in the Berlin Museum with works by the Berlin painter.
In 2002 the German Historical Museum hosted the exhibition "The Second Creation" in the Martin-Gropius-Bau . Works by around 150 painters, including Julius Jacob, related to Berlin were shown here.
