Hanns Ferdinand Josef Kropff

Hanns Ferdinand Josef Kropff (born August 7, 1882 in Gablonz , Austria-Hungary ; † May 6, 1963 ) was a professor for commercial advertising at the University of Frankfurt am Main . He is considered to be one of the first representatives of advertising theory at German universities.

biography

Kropff was born in Gablonz as the son of a Prague university professor. He began his studies in 1901 and attended the universities of Munich , Berlin , Leipzig and Vienna . In 1908 he finished his studies and started working in advertising. From 1913 he was head of the advertising department at Leonhard Tietz AG and from 1919 a consultant for German and Austrian companies. Later he was an appraiser for public administrations. In 1916 he founded the first advertising seminar at the University of Cologne, which he led until 1919. Kropff created the "Elida Girl" for a Leipzig cosmetics company and organized the "Georg Schlicht Prize" for the "most beautiful German woman portrait in 1928". In 1929 he held the lecture psychology for a commercial artist at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden , which his walk is from the artistic contemplation of advertising to psychological. In 1936 he received a teaching position for the psychology of advertising at the University of World Trade in Vienna, which was later expanded to include theory and technology of advertising. Kropff became a member of the NSDAP in 1940 . His teaching assignment ended in 1945.

In 1949 he became head of the Munich Institute for Advertising Science, which he gave up in 1954 when he was given a teaching position for advertising at the University of Frankfurt am Main in the winter semester . On April 8, 1954, he was appointed honorary professor. He taught in Frankfurt until the summer semester of 1961.
