EJ Pratt

Edwin John Pratt (born February 4, 1882 in Western Bay , † April 26, 1964 in Toronto ) was a Canadian writer, university professor and critic and is considered one of the most important Canadian poets of his generation.

The son of a Methodist preacher grew up in Newfoundland and attended Methodist College in St. John's. He worked as a teacher for two years and became a candidate for preacher in 1904. After a three-year trial period, he studied at Victoria College of the University of Toronto theology and psychology and was ordained 1913th He then gave psychology lectures at the University of Toronto and taught English literature at Victoria College from 1920 until his retirement in 1952.

Pratt published his first poems as early as 1914, but he only became famous with the volume Newfoundland Verse , published in 1924 , which was followed by more than 20 more (from The Witches' Brew and Titans in 1926 to the Collected Poems , 1958). From 1936 to 1943 he edited The Canadian Poetry Magazine . In 1930 he became a member of the Royal Society of Canada , George VI. awarded him the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1946 . In 1937, 1940 and 1952 he received Governor General's Awards .

Pratt was married to the author Viola Whitney Pratt . His daughter Claire Pratt was also known as a poet and graphic artist.
