Agustín Abarca

Agustín Abarca (born December 27, 1882 in Talca , † May 28, 1953 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter .

Abarca attended the Liceo de Hombres and the Instituto Comercial in Talca before he came to painting through his first teacher Pablo Burchard . From 1904 to 1907 he was a student of Pedro Lira and Alberto Valenzuela Llanos at the Art Academy of the Universidad Católica in Santiago . From 1909 to 1912 he studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes with Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor .

From 1916 Abarca was inspector of the Escuela Normal in Victoria. After his return to Santiago he devoted himself primarily to painting. In 1940 he was awarded the chair of painting and drawing at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Viña del Mar , where he taught for a year.

Abarca is counted to the group of painters of the Generación del Trece around his teacher Sotomayor. He was particularly friendly with Jorge Letelier , Pedro Luna and Pablo Burchard, and his circle also included the poets Gabriela Mistral , Omar Cáceres and Jorge González Bastías and the composer Remigio Acevedo . He has received numerous awards for his painting, and several of his works are owned by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , the Pinacoteca of the Universidad de Concepción and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo of the Universidad de Chile .
