Pedro Luna

Pedro Luna Pérez (born October 19, 1896 in Los Ángeles , † December 18, 1956 in Viña del Mar ) was a Chilean painter .

Luna studied from 1912 at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Santiago and was a student of Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor , Juan Francisco González , José Mercedes Ortega , José Backhaus , Alberto Valenzuela Llanos , Julio Fossa Calderón and Pedro Lira . After an exhibition organized by José Prida in the Sala El Mercurio in Santiago, where thirty of his paintings were shown, he became a member of the Generación del Trece painters group .

He earned his living with anatomical drawings for the Escuela de Medicina until the Chilean government made it possible for him to study in Europe in 1920. He stayed in Rome and took lessons from Eduardo Chicharro y Agüera , director of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando .

After his return in 1922 he traveled to southern Chile, where he painted landscapes and depicted the customs of the Araucans. In 1924 he went to Traiguén, where he lived for three years and founded a painting and music academy. He later taught at the Academia de Pintura in Linares, from where he made a trip through the Strait of Magellan. In 1934 he returned to Santiago. He spent the last two years of his life in Viña del Mar.

If he was unable to achieve great success as a painter during his lifetime - the only solo exhibition in Santiago in 1922 was disappointing - after his death he was honored in several retrospectives (1953, 1956, 1957, 1972) and solo exhibitions. His works can be found u. a. in the collections of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , the Museo de Arte y Artesanía de Linares , the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo of the Universidad de Chile and the Pinacoteca of the Universidad de Concepción .
