José Backhaus

José Backhaus Martin (* 1884 in Santiago de Chile , † 1922 in Paris ) was a Chilean painter.

Backhaus attended the Colegio San Ignacio and began studying at the engineering school of the Universidad Católica . He broke off this and became a student of Pedro Lira and Cosme San Martín at the Escuela de Bellas Artes . At the age of fifteen he had his first exhibition in the Salón Official where he was honored with an honorable mention the following year.

In 1904 he visited the Colonia Tolstoyana , and in 1906 he traveled to Europe and studied at the Académie Julien in Paris with Jean Paul Laurens . From 1912 to 1912 he traveled to Belgium, Holland and England on a grant from the Chilean government and studied ancient painting techniques in Florence.

After his return to Chile he became a professor at the Escuela de Bellas Artes ; he also wrote art reviews and books on the painting of Cubism, Orphic Cubism and Futurism . In 1917 he traveled to Spain with his wife, the writer Sara Camino Malvar, and organized art exhibitions there. In 1921 both went to Paris. There they met artists like Pablo Picasso , Le Corbusier and the brothers Julio and Manuel Ortiz de Zárate . Several of his works are in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes .
