José Mercedes Ortega

José Mercedes Ortega Pereira (* 1856 in Cauquenes ; † September 1, 1933 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter.

Ortega came from a respected family in the Región del Maule who promoted his diverse artistic interests at an early stage. At the age of fourteen he went to the Instituto Nacional in Santiago , later he was a student of Juan Bianchi at the Acedamia de Pintura and studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes with Alejandro Cicarelli , Ernst Kirchbach and Juan Mochi . During his studies he was given the opportunity to paint the Santa Lucía Chapel with Pedro León Carmona . This brought him numerous commissions from the incumbent mayor, Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna, for portraits of important personalities in order to create a historical picture gallery.

In 1882 he received a grant from the Chilean government to study in Europe. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a student of Ernest Hébert and Luc-Olivier Merson during the five years of his stay . With the painting Tegualda Encuentra el Cadáver de Lautaro he won the second prize at the Liverpool International Exhibition in 1886.

After his return to Chile he succeeded Cosme San Martín as professor at the Escuela de Bellas Artes . There were among others Ernesto Molina , Agustín Undurraga , Pedro Luna and Arturo Gordon among his students. Ortega's works can be found in the collections of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , the Museo Histórico Nacional and the Pinacoteca of the Universidad de Concepción .
