Stellaland (officially Dutch Republiek Stellaland ) was a short-lived Boer republic . Founded in 1882, the Republic of Stellaland united with the Republic of Goshen to form the United States of Stellaland after only two years .
The British protectorate of Bechuanaland bordered Stellaland to the north and west and the South African Republic to the east and south. Today the area is part of the Republic of South Africa .
history
Stellaland owed its origin to a conflict between the indigenous Batlaping and Koranna tribes . David Massouw , the leader of the Koranna, had promised a group of about 400 Boers settlement land in return for their support in the fight against the Batlaping. After defeating them, the republic was officially founded on July 26, 1882.
The first and only President of the Republic was Gerrit Jacobus van Niekerk (1849-1896). The Boers formed a commission, which staked out the area of the future capital Vryburg and exactly 416 parcels. These parcels were then distributed by lot .
The Republic of Stellaland was divided into five field cornets:
- Genesa (northwest)
- Tweelings-Kop (northeast)
- Hart-Rivier (southeast)
- Poeloemoe (southwest)
- Vryburg (center)
